Last week, we had the first UHD Showcase event at Cardiff University. The successful event showcased the Janet network by demonstrating the use of this technology for medical application. There were several demos including 3D radiotherapy imaging sent from Cardiff to the Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Centre (PSNC) in Poland, and 3D heritage imagery from Poland to Cardiff. The London 2012 Olympic Games will be showcasing the use of new technology in practice, marking the first truly digital Games in the UK. From 23 July to 12 August Janet will be enabling the BBC and NHK to use the Janet network to broadcast key moments of the Games in Super Hi-Vision at various locations the UK, and around the world.

Ultra high definition technology has become a standard within the last few years, explored not only within the broadcast trade but also, more recently within the education and research industry. There has been an emerging interest, with its role yet to be defined within the education and research community.
