Ultra high definition technology has become a standard within the last few years, explored not only within the broadcast trade but also, more recently within the education and research industry. There has been an emerging interest, with its role yet to be defined within the education and research community.
Janet have been working on a project with the BBC to stream Super Hi-Vision on a national and international scale. Viewing screens have been placed in London, Bradford and Glasgow which allow the public to view this amazing technology. Internationally, streams are also being sent over Janet towards Washington DC and several sites in Japan, using other national research and education networks (including Geant, Internet2 and GEMNet)
Last week, we had the first UHD Showcase event at Cardiff University. The successful event showcased the Janet network by demonstrating the use of this technology for medical application. There were several demos including 3D radiotherapy imaging sent from Cardiff to the Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Centre (PSNC) in Poland, and 3D heritage imagery from Poland to Cardiff.
