After the excitement of last week’s world tour, it's a case of back to reality this week; every day has been spent in the office. There’s not a great deal to report this week other than a lot of ‘finishing off’ and ‘tidying up’ is going on in preparation for the Christmas break.

Following on from my blog post ‘Out and About #1’ earlier in the week, the past 2 days has seen yet more exciting activities taking place.

As I'm sat on the 16:40 from Bristol Parkway to Leeds, it strikes me that I have 3 and a half hours spare so could make a start on my next blog update. This week I've been let out of the office so there's lots to talk about...

It has been suggested that I start to include photos in my weekly Janet6 blog updates. It might be a struggle some weeks to make this in any way interesting or relevant, but I might as well give it a go. This week’s photo is from a visit to the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL). It was a gloriously crisp and freezing morning, and the photo is nothing more than a view from the main entrance, the building in the centre of the photo however is more relevant as it’s the location of one of the Regional Network Entry Points that will connect Janet6 to the Thames Valley Network.

Another week passes and I find myself wondering what has happened this week that’s of sufficient interest to warrant a mention in my weekly blog update. Truth be told, not a great deal. Most of the week seems to have been spent updating spreadsheets and project plans, and whilst this is a vital part of managing any project, it’s not particularly interesting. It’s worth mentioning that the majority of the information being used to update said spreadsheets and project plans has been provided by RNOs and RNEP host Universities.

The rollout of Janet6 is now well and truly in full swing. The job of a Project Manager is generally one of coordination, and with a project this size there’s plenty to coordinate! Whilst our suppliers are busy working on delivery of their components of the network, there’s plenty of other things to keep us busy.

After many weeks of planning and harnessing the knowledge of my technology collegues, I am now pleased to say that the latest in our series of Janet6 documents is now ready.  This will give you an idea of what Janet6 will deliver and the current overview of the network topology.  Some of these documents will also be finding their way to a few of you over the next few days.

The last meeting of the Janet6 Advisory Group in June 2012, recommended that a new Regional Networking Forum be set up to support our plans for future regional delivery with the new network. A key issue for us is how our evolving regional delivery strategies fit within external regional policy developments and programmes.

It has been an amazing few months securing the funding for Janet6 and finding the right partners to implement it. We're now entering the roll-out phase to build a research and education network that will help underpin our vital national research and education resources for the next decade and beyond. I've only been at Janet for a relatively short few months on a fixed term contract, but I have over 20 years professional experience in science/education policy and innovation development, and I think Janet6 is going to be something really special.

We had a lovely day on Tuesday (18 September) meeting our new partners, Ciena, over a sandwich or two.  It was good to put face to name as so far I'd only met these people over email.  I must say there was a distinct lack of females in the room, but I guess in a highly technology environment  that's a little invevitable.  Both Bob Day and J.P. Hemingway cemented our parthership over photos and a hand shake and much like a wedding party the speeches ensued, with each giving a taste of their roles going forward and an insight into our journey to get here.
