On the 4th and 5th November 2014, members of the community took part in some focus groups to help us understand their streaming needs. The feedback we received was really useful, and has been collated into the attached report.  If you have any questions about the focus groups, report or what we are doing in this area, please contact Emma.Smith@jisc.ac.uk

For the past few years Janet, a part of Jisc, has provided some streaming servers that are used by the National Student Television Association (NaSTA), the Student Radio Association (SRA) and for one off events such as the Royal Shakespeare Company’s recurring school streaming events. As part of a regular and ongoing review of Jisc services, we have organised two online focus groups to help us to determine wider demand for a live streaming service and to confirm what customers would expect from such a service.

At Janet, we have a set of dedicated servers that run in an Origin and Edge configuration. We have one Origin server using Transcoding licenses from Wowza which receives the incoming streams from the user. The Origin server then communicates with the three Edge servers. This configuration allows for load balancing, enabling redundancy if a connection to one of the servers is lost. It also ensures that one server is not over taxed with connections. The servers are connected to the Janet core network at multiple locations adding an additional layer of redundancy incase of power issues.

Which port/s need to be open for streaming to the Janet servers? Port 80 is the standard port that is used for streaming live with the Janet servers, ensure that this is open and it should work correctly. What Bandwidth is required to stream live on the internet?
