Appendix A – Cisco® MCM Configuration Summary

Download as PDFDownload as PDF

The following configuration is for a session that sets up a Cisco® router as a gatekeeper and H.323 proxy. It is minimally commented, so for further explanation please refer to the Cisco® information in Section 7. In this example, a single physical port has been used between the endpoint and the college’s site access router. The commands would have to be altered slightly in a different topology.

It is expected that the configuration will be carried out by personnel with experience of configuring Cisco® routers, so many commands that are not relevant to gatekeeper/proxy set-up have not been included in this summary (although these would be necessary for full and secure functionality of the router).
Plug the network cable (100Mbit/s Full Duplex recommended) into an interface. This is normally called interface fastethernet0/0 or fastethernet0/1. The configuration of the interface is dependent on which interface you plug your cable into. This example has the cable plugged into interface 0/1.

Log in to the router and enter en to enable command mode. Enter conf term to get in to configuration mode (and later, CTRL Z to exit the configuration mode once completed). When finished all configuration enter CTRL Z and write mem to save the configuration. If at any time you are unsure as to which command to enter, options can be found by entering a question mark. This configuration example includes some commands that are necessary if starting from scratch with a new router. Those necessary for gatekeeper and/or H.323 proxy configuration (which are discussed in Section 7) are in bold. This script is designed so that with minimal editing, it can be copied straight into the router. Comments are preceded by an ! exclamation mark.

! Start of configuration
……….
! If running proxy services
proxy h.323
! Configure the port which connects the gatekeeper to the network
interface FastEthernet0/1
! Enter this port’s IP address followed by its subnet mask (replace ‘xxx’s)
ip address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 255.255.255.248
! Next two commands assume the device connected is set to 100Mbit/s, full
! duplex, otherwise change accordingly (to avoid ‘autosensing’)
! Set duplex type to full
duplex full
! Set speed to 100Mbit/s
speed 100
! Designate the IP address of this interface to be the Proxy’s IP address
h323 interface
! Specify an H323 ID for the Proxy (replace any-px with your proxy’s name)
h323 h323-id any-px.any.ac.uk
! Configure the Proxy to register with the gatekeeper (substitute the IP address of your
! gatekeeper)
h323 gatekeeper ipaddr 192.168.7.8
! Pass T.120 unmodified (do not proxy T.120 data):
h323 t120 bypass
! exit to go back to router config:
exit

! Enter gatekeeper configuration mode
gatekeeper
! Now in (config-gk) mode
! Set local zone (substitute your local values)
zone local gatekeeper-name.any.ac.uk any.ac.uk
! Set remote zone gatekeepers (JVCS national directory gatekeepers)
zone remote gatekeeper-name1.ja.net ja.net aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd 1719
zone remote gatekeeper-name2.ja.net ja.net zzz.yyy.xxx.www 1719
! Enter E164 prefix for your gatekeeper (supplied by JVCS)
zone prefix gk-name.any.ac.uk 0044xxxxx*
! E164 prefixes for JVCS national directory servers
zone prefix gatekeeper-name1.ja.net 00*
zone prefix gatekeeper-name2.ja.net 00*
! to make the default action to deny access to non-defined endpoints:
no zone subnet gk.any.ac.uk default enable
! endpoint registration (substitute your terminals’ IP addresses and your gatekeeper’s DNS
! name)

! if you do not wish to use the H.323 proxy use the following commands:
no use-proxy any-gk.any.ac.uk default inbound-to terminal
no use-proxy any-gk.any.ac.uk default outbound-from terminal

! if you wish to use the H.323 proxy use the following commands:
