The service is intended to provide a basic primary nameserver service to support e-mail and web use by smaller or less experienced Janet customer organisations. Organisations capable of providing their own primary nameserver should do so rather than relying on the Janet Primary Nameserver Service. For Janet customer organisations that have been allocated a DNS domain by the relevant domain registrar, the service can provide primary nameservers that will respond to queries for a small number of resource records in their domain.

Some organisations may not wish to delegate their entire domain to the Janet Primary DNS service, but still want to benefit from using the automatic failover feature and/or be able to redirect selected records in the event that their primary domain becomes unavailable. One option that could allow you to achieve this is to delegate a subdomain to the Janet Primary DNS service, and populate that with the address records that need to fail over or be manually managed in the event the primary DNS server fails.

Organisations using the Janet Primary Nameserver Service can now request access to a secure web portal to undertake administrative tasks to their zone files. This will enable the authorised administrators to edit their resource records whenever they need to, and schedule changes outside of normal working hours. Current subscribers of the PNS service who wish to enable the new enhancement please email service@ja.net requesting access to the web administration interface.
