All organisations applying either for a new domain name, or modification, in the ac.uk domain must have an Approved Registrar Membership Account with Jisc, unless they are connected to the Janet network. There is no charge for organisations having an Approved Registrar Membership Account. However, this facility is generally only available to organisations who anticipate that they will be submitting a number of domain name requests through Jisc.

Jisc customers may pay for their additional domain name requests in advance by either credit card or BACS payment. If sites are paying by BACS can they please advise the Naming Administrator and reference their payments as DNS.

Registrars will be advised of the reasons where domain name requests are rejected by the Naming Committee. It is the responsibility of the Registrar to ensure that they pass this information back to their customers. If the application is not successful the requester may appeal provided that the appeal is made within four weeks of the date of notification of the outcome of the request. Appeals will only be heard on the basis that the requester believes that the request meets the requirements of this policy.

A domain name may be deleted upon receipt of a returned renewal request, from the domain owner or registrar, stating that a renewal is not required. We advise that the domain owner informs their Registrar of their intention to not renew their domain. A domain name may also be deleted upon receipt of a PDF request (on the domain owner’s letter-headed paper), faxed from the domain owner, stating if the domain is no longer required.

Members will receive a renewal notice one month prior to the renewal date of any domains associated with their account. The renewal notice must be returned, indicating whether the domains listed are to be renewed. If a domain is to be renewed, the charge will be added to the appropriate monthly invoice. However, should the renewal notice not be returned by the specified date, it will be deemed that the name is no longer required and so the name will be removed from the DNS with immediate effect.
