English and Humanities sessions from Virtually University

19 September 2013 at 2:24pm

We have 3 forthcoming VU videoconferences taking place this term. Each will be delivered by PhD students representing Sheffield and Birmingham.

The first is taking place at 11.20 on 27th June. Continuing our English Literature & Language theme this term, Adam Smith from The University of Sheffield, will explore a relatively unknown Eighteenth Century text to introduce Year 12 students to the skills necessary for studying English at university level.

English Literature & Language: Print, Poetry and Prose: Exploring Eighteenth-Century Print Culture with Joseph Addison’s The Free-Holder by Adam Smith, The University of Sheffield on 27th June 2013 between 11.20 and 12.20

Then, at 11.20 on 28th June, George Makris from The University of Birmingham will provide a KS4 enrichment session introducing Art History with a specific focus on art in Byzantium. This is an ideal opportunity for Arts and Humanities students to find out what is possible in terms of university study.

Art History: Discovering the Unknown: The Arts in Byzantium by George Makris, The University of Birmingham on 28th June 2013 between 11.20 and 12.20

Finally, for Year 12 students interested in Classics/Ancient History, on 1st July Jennifer Palmer from The University of Birmingham will introduce students to the Mycenaeans, discovering their culture and gods through their artefacts.

Ancient History: Treasures and Trinkets: Finding the Gods of Greece by Jennifer Palmer, The University of Birmingham on 1st July 2013 between 11.20 and 12.20

The videoconferences are free to schools and sessions targeted at Year 12s are also open to KS4 gifted and talented students.
