eduroam Companion is a mobile application running on Android and iOS that provides users with a fast way to locate eduroam connectivity whilst on the move. This group exists to generate feedback and ideas for improving the application, and for collecting reports of any issues encountered.

Ideas and Improvements

9 September 2013 at 9:53am

This is a list of features that have been suggested by the commnunity, and generally accepted as good ideas. It is not a concrete list of features that are guarenteed to appear in the future, just ideas under consideration.

Additional Frontends

Support for Blackberry and Windows Phone.

User Reporting of Issues

The application could allow users to flag up connectivity issues - the exact mechanism of how this is fed back to the site affected would have to be considered, as well as how the user actually submits this feedback if they aren't able to gain connectivity.

Compliance Scanning

The technical specification lists a number of ports and services that must be available to the end user, as well as a number of criteria that a 'good' eduroam deployment should exhibit. Allowing the user to check the compliance of the site they are at and report the results would lead to faster identification of any problems and an improved experience.

Additional Releases in Other Stores

Initially when the Amazon app store was released, its install base was very small. Since then it has become the sole mechanism for obtaining apps on the Kindle platform. It may be beneficial to reconsider adding the app to Amazon's app store when it is updated.

Administrator approval of unofficial data

Allow site administrators to view tags and mark them as being genuine. Such tags could then be fed back upstream to improve the official data.

Comments

And Version2 of the app really needs to include more information about the service provided by the Visited site. The following info is all captured from the participant organisations and is in the Euro database.

The app v1 tells users how many APs there are - fine as far as that goes.  But in my opinion the following would really double the usefulness of the app:

Wired connection availbility      Yes/No

NAT used                                  Yes/No

Application proxy present         Yes/No

Any ports restricted                  Yes/No

IPv6 supported                         Yes/No

This info could go into a secondary 'pop-up' window

PS. Since WPA2/AES is THE ONLY standard recommended in the UK (and will be the ONLY one permitted from Jan 2015) and is the most likely to be found worldwide, there's not much point in including that in the info about a site.

I'll grudgingly say that it is relevant to specify the SSID despite 'eduroam' being the ONLY one permitted in the UK - you might come across some others in Europe since the Euro solution to the Russell Sq problem is through the SSID.

You need to leave room for a couple additional info fields...

Service compliance verified (by QoS probe)      Yes/No

And one that is a long way off (if ever)...

Content-filtered service availability                   Yes/No
