Google Chromecast
the future of media streaming or a portent to problems we'll see with future WiFi gadgets?
From the outset, it appears Google Chromecast is aimed at the home market with not even a nod to enterprise space. You can forget using Chromecast and 'casting' to your meeting room TV or reception TVs for a few reasons
1) Chromecast does not currently support 802.1X wireless (feature request has been asked)
2) Chromecast only works in 2.4GHz with current model - so must struggle alongside dumber clients with limited bandwidth - and wont take advantage of 802.11ac :( (also, the device is FCC 802.11 - so it appears that channels >11 cannot be used)
3) most casting is done via the device going to collect resources from the net - thus if the device has poor WiFi recption (buried behind large flat screen panel) the streaming will be poor - particularly at the highest 720p resolution settings)
4) no security. ANYONE who can see the chromecast device on the network (via multicast) can select it as their 'casting' device - with no pairing PIN or code/passphase - if you have any on your network and they can be seen by clients fun/mischief will ensue.
