British Board of Film Classification
The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) is the regulator for films and DVDs in the UK. It has an active education department who provide insight into how films are rated and why, through dedicated websites CBBFC (Children's BBFC) and SBBFC (Students' BBFC), school visits and in-house seminars.
Videoconferencing offers students the chance to meet a BBFC examiner and talk face to face about how and why films are given age ratings; how issues like sex, violence, bad language, smoking and horror are dealt with in 2012; plus insights into areas such as child protection, and what it is like to decide what people can and cannot watch.
BBFC videoconferencing sessions follow a standard Q&A format. With sufficient notice it is possible for talks to be tailored to the specific needs of a class or year group. This might include discussing a specific film or issue, say one which is being discussed as part of a media or film studies course, or even discussing with an examiner how coursework film projects would be rated. Our examiners are happy to talk to primary or secondary groups, teachers or university students and will tailor the material and discussion points accordingly.
