Gone phishing...
About a year ago I published links to a couple of videos on raising awareness of phishing:
- https://community.jisc.ac.uk/videos/phishing-university-sheffield - created for staff and students at the University of Sheffield
- https://community.jisc.ac.uk/videos/minute-phishing - a video produced for Student Finance England
Recently I’ve noticed an increase in phishing emails to my non-Jisc email accounts including one today purporting to be from the Co-operative Bank. One thing that stood out on this one, compared to others I’ve seen, is that it plays on current security concerns by implying that a security breach means customers have to verify their account details.
Despite this seemingly clever approach, the email still has the usual tell-tale signs of a phishing scam in that it has poorly worded text, isn’t personally addressed, comes from an obviously spoofed address, and hovering over the link shows a URL not associated with Co-Op Bank (as I am sure they know how to spell co-operative). Oh and the fact that I don’t bank with them is also a clue...
