Project Moonshot is a Janet-led initiative, in partnership with the GÉANT project and others, to develop a single unifying technology for extending the benefits of federated identity to a broad range of non-Web services, including Cloud infrastructures, High Performance Computing & Grid infrastructures and other commonly deployed services including mail, file store, remote access and instant messaging. The goal of the technology is to enable the management of access to a broad range of services and applications, using a single technology and infrastructure. This is expected to significantly improve the delivery of these services by providing users with a common single sign-on, for both internal and external services. Service providers will be able to more easily offer their services to users from other organisations using a single common authentication mechanism. This will enhance the user’s experience, and reduce costs for those organisations supporting users, and delivering services to them. This group is for community of Moonshot users, whether you're new to the technology, you're currently evaluating and getting to grips with it, or you've deployed it. For the list of guidance available about Moonshot within this group, see the Start Here wiki page. Jisc Assent, the production service underpinned by the Moonshot technology, went live on 25th March 2015. Case Studies

A number of organisations have been investigating Moonshot by piloting the technology. Four of these organisations have produced the following case studies explaining what they see as the benefits of implementing Moonshot.

Diamond Light Source, the UK's national synchrotron facility, is piloting Moonshot within the EU PANData project to help facilitate the way in which major European scientific facilities work together. Find out how Moonshot technology is being used to support scientists access remote SSH consoles in the Diamond Light Source Case Study.

Cancer Research UK is the world’s leading charity dedicated to beating cancer through research. The need to share information collaboratively has led the company to trial Janet’s Moonshot technology at the charity’s Cambridge Research Institute, as described in the Cancer Research UK Case Study.

Aston University provides computing capacity to researchers within the university through High Performance Computing (HPC). For researchers outside of the university creating appropriate access has proved to be more complicated: this has led the university to trial Moonshot technology to enable access through single sign-on authentication. Further details can be found in the Aston University Case Study.

STFC- the Science and Technology Facilities Council - is one of Europe’s largest multidisciplinary research organisations, working with universities, other research councils, and international partners to promote fundamental research across the spectrum of discovery, from the secrets of the Universe to new materials and medicines. The STFC Case Study explains how the Council is trialling Moonshot technology to enable both national and international partners who collaborate with the STFC to use existing credentials from their own organisation for authentication.
