Using Free Network Tools

28, 30 July, 1, 8, 15 & 20 August – Live Online Course

Over 6 sessions, this online course covers the basics of Network Sniffing, from configuring networking devices to enable sniffing to occur, through to interpreting the output of the Wireshark tool. It will also explore alternative tools that can be used to support network-based investigations.

IPv6 Fundamentals

5 August, London

IPv6 is the new version of the Internet Protocol (IP), the common protocol underpinning all Internet communications. IPv6 will ultimately supersede the current version, IPv4, in order to accommodate the rapid growth of the Internet. The aim of this course is to provide a basic introduction to IPv6.  This will include the evolution of IPv6,  the differences between the IPv6 and IPv4 protocols. IPv6 address allocations are explained in the context of the Janet network, along with information on the deployment of IPv6, how to manage and monitor IPv6 traffic and concluding with an implementation case study.

eduroam Fundamentals,

6 August, Bristol

This course provides delegates with an understanding of how eduroamUK operates at both basic technical and support levels. This includes an overview of how to configure user equipment and solve some of the issues those users might face. The course also covers the configuration of wireless and wired clients for use on the eduroamUK Service, details of the logfile examination and methods of fault finding and reporting.

Implementing eduroam at your Organisation

eduroam (education roaming) is the secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community. eduroam provides an infrastructure that allows users to authenticate onto a visited network (wireless and/or wired) using their home site credentials, without any local administrative burden or complexities on the user or the local IT staff.

This course provides and overview of the service, its configuration & deployment and overall monitoring & troubleshooting of the service.

This course is ideal for those working in Janet connected organisations wishing to develop their understanding of how to implement eduroam in their organisation.

Effective Identification and Management of Security Incidents

Detecting and efficiently responding to incidents, especially those where critical resources are exposed to elevated risks is important for any organisation. This course is designed to share best practice in incident response, and provide hands on scenario-based activities to develop participants understanding and to enable them to apply this within their site.

Implementing a Shibboleth 2 identity Provider

19 August, London

The UK federation provide a standardised way of exchanging authenticationand authorisation requests in a consistent, secure and privacy preserving manner. Organisations who have members who wish to access such resources may wish to run their own Shibboleth Identity Provider to enable this. This course will provide a number of discussions and hands-on labs for delegates to work through in individually and in a small group, centred around the installation and configuration of a Shibboleth 2 Identity Provider; this will then be tested against a reference Shibboleth 2 Service Provider. The course includes some discussion of migration from an existing Shibboleth 1.3 installation.

This course will provide a number of discussions and hands-on labs for delegates to work through individually and in small groups. It centres around the installation and configuration of a Shibboleth 2 Service Provider; along with guidance and practical experience of integrating this with a web application's access control mechanisms. Hands on Digital Forensics

21 August, Cambridge

This course introduces the topic of Digital Forensics and the use of this technology within the IT industry. It provides an overview of digital forensics, evidence and computer crime. An introduction to incident response is given followed by the practical acquisition and preservation of digital data. Once the digital data has been acquired, the analysis of the data is performed before looking at mobile devices and into the future plus forensic circumvention methods. The practical focus of this course is the use of open source tools which can be used in a number of scenarios to assist with the networking and security work undertaken by members of the Janet community.
