Welcome to the Jisc Certificate Service group. For an update on the NEW Jisc certificate service please follow the below link. The New Jisc Certiface Service  The service offers a number of different X509 SSL certificates, including Extended Validation certificates that give users the highest possible assurance, as well as S/MIME email certificates for digitally signing emails. Jisc has an agreement with the Certificate Authority, QuoVadis who is the provider of the certificates. The service has been running since 2006 and has issued many thousands of certificates to organisations in UK research and education. This is a Community group where users can obtain relevant information, receive service updates and provide feedback.

The Jisc Certificate Service is changing!

13 November 2020 at 1:19pm

The next generation of our Certificate Service is now live and ready to be used.

The new service has a new subscription model based on a small number of usage classes - giving a small number of certificates for free on one end of the scale and culminating in an of an offering unlimited number of certificates for a fixed price. The pricing has been set to ensure the average organisation within each usage class pays less than they currently do overall.

The new service also has many added benefits as compared to the existing service, including:

  • Direct access to the SECTIGO certificate manager portal for self-service
  • Unlimited certificate types within Usage Class
  • Greater control of domain validation and finer grained management within an organisation (can break down organisations into departments)
  • Access to automation tools – ACME can be used to pull OV/EV certificates.

We will gradually be migrating members across to the new service between now and next summer.

Another announcement about transition will be sent out shortly.

Over the next few months, when you are about to run out of credits you are able to migrate to the new certificate service as an early adopter. Remaining customers will migrate during 2021 as they are about to run out of credits. Note that if you have run out of credits and have an urgent need for a certificate issued by the current provider, QuoVadis, please email us at trustandidentity@jisc.ac.uk and we can enable this for you.

The following tables show the subscription costs per usage class for Jisc core members and non-members. When you migrate, we will use the amount of certificates issued to your organisation in 2019 as a guide to which usage class you would fit in, but you are able to self-select when signing up to the service if you want to be in a higher class.

Note that all certificates types are treated equally and count as a single certificate towards the total – OV, EV, Wildcard, S/MIME, code-signing, etc. This is much simpler than the current service.

How does this affect SANs with regards to determining usage class? Is it like the current system where a specific amount are allowed before it counts as an extra certificate, do they all count as one separate certificate, or does it not matter how many SANs are included in each cert?

Nice simple answer - a certificate counts as a single certificate no matter how many SANs/domains are included.
