One of Jisc’s activities is to monitor and, where possible, influence regulatory developments that affect us and our customer universities, colleges and schools as operators of large computer networks. Since Janet and its customer networks are classified by Ofcom as private networks, postings here are likely to concentrate on the regulation of those networks. Postings here are, to the best of our knowledge, accurate on the date they are made, but may well become out of date or unreliable at unpredictable times thereafter. Before taking action that may have legal consequences, you should talk to your own lawyers. NEW: To help navigate the many posts on the General Data Protection Regulation, I've classified them as most relevant to developing a GDPR compliance process, GDPR's effect on specific topics, or how the GDPR is being developed. Or you can just use my free GDPR project plan.

Timeline for Welsh top level domains

Tuesday, September 2, 2014 - 16:12

Nominet have now started the process of issuing domain names in the two Welsh top level domains, .wales and .cymru. Key dates are now available on their timeline, though there is a note that these may yet change so those intending to apply should subscribe to their mailing list for updates.

The key period for universities and colleges is likely to be the Welsh Business Priority period, which runs from 3rd November to 24th December 2014: between those dates organisations trading in Wales will be able to apply for the domain name(s) matching their trademarks or trading names.

Between 29th December and 25th February, the "landrush" period, anyone can apply for any domain (subject to rules on conflicts with registered trademarks, reserved and premium names, etc.). If there is more than one application for a given domain name within that period then the conflict will be resolved by auction.

From 1st March 2015 remaining domains will become available on a first-come, first-served basis.
