Keep up to date with our progress for Janet6 - the new Janet infrastructure - as we move through to the design, build and roll-out stages of the project.

Well, it's been some time since I wrote on this blog so I thought I'd give you a little update on where we are.  The engineering guys have been working hard across the country to roll-out of the core of Janet6.  W/C 20 May commissioning of this part of the network was completed and they are now going through a process called 'snagging' which involves labelling the fibres correctly, installing/replacing patch leads etc.

I haven't been on this blog for a while, but I thought this was worth a mention.  On Wednesday this week (6 Feb) we formally accepted the Janet6 core fibre and PoP infrastructure from SSET.  This is pretty significant as we are ahead of time, so well done to all of the guys who have been working hard to make this possible!  It's only phase 1 of the acceptance process I'm told, but it's a great start!

Next will be the fibre instrastucture from the core to the the regional network entry points, then the central infrastucture will be fully in place.

In the latest issue of Janet News that is about to hit all good desks (and maybe a few of the rest of you too), I’ve written a little bit about some of the technologies that will be deployed at the transmission level in Janet6 – Wavelength Selective Switches, Coherent Detection, and probably the shortest description of Dual Polarisation Quadrature Phase Shift Keying that has ever been seen.  There are many other components at various layers that will make up Janet6, and I’m going to start below the ground and work my way up.

After many weeks of planning and harnessing the knowledge of my technology collegues, I am now pleased to say that the latest in our series of Janet6 documents is now ready.  This will give you an idea of what Janet6 will deliver and the current overview of the network topology.  Some of these documents will also be finding their way to a few of you over the next few days.

We had a lovely day on Tuesday (18 September) meeting our new partners, Ciena, over a sandwich or two.  It was good to put face to name as so far I'd only met these people over email.  I must say there was a distinct lack of females in the room, but I guess in a highly technology environment  that's a little invevitable.  Both Bob Day and J.P. Hemingway cemented our parthership over photos and a hand shake and much like a wedding party the speeches ensued, with each giving a taste of their roles going forward and an insight into our journey to get here.

Welcome to the Janet6 blog in what is hoped to be the start of many blog posts.

The last few weeks have been busy, not least for the Janet6 project team, but also for those of us involved in the marketing of the project.

On 6 August, we celebrated the signing of contracts between SSET, our chosen fibre providers, and Janet.  The small gathering with our partners and the project team gave us the good opportunity not only to eat pastries, but to get to know the SSET guys a little better; it also gave us the usual 'smile and shake' photo opportunity as contracts were signed.
